Mrs. Ayr

Welcome to Mrs. Ayr's Second Grade!

Dear Second Grade Family,

Welcome to Russell Elementary School.  I hope everyone had a restful summer.  I am looking forward to working with your child this school year.  My goal, as your child’s educator, is to provide meaningful experiences that will promote learning.

We use Responsive Classroom in our classroom.  This approach to teaching and learning involves many different ideas and concepts.  The most important part is we begin each day with a Morning Meeting.  This allows us to greet each other and share any concerns, comments, or news.  One goal of using this approach is to create a climate and tone of warmth and safety.  In the beginning of the year, we learn about our schedule and routines of our day, expectations of our behavior, and expectations of how we learn together.  Attached is a classroom contract.  Please review the contract with your child, sign, and send back to school.  Our classroom “HOOT” rules are also attached.

Our reading series is Reading Street Common Core.  This reading series supports reading, writing, and language development.  More information will be coming home on our reading program.  I send home a letter for each story.

Our writing series, the Language Circle/Project Read Written Expression teaches the fundamentals of writing and paragraph development.  We will begin the year developing sentences.

Our math series, envision Math Common Core, has sixteen hands-on topics that we will be covering.  We will begin our year reviewing three first grade objectives.  We will be telling and writing time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.  We will be identifying the values of coins and their comparative values.  For example: a dime is greater than a nickel.  We will be reviewing graphing.  Please review these concepts with your child.  After reviewing time and money, we will move into Topic One: Understanding Addition and Subtraction.  It is so important that your child practice basic addition and subtraction facts.  Spending five to ten minutes a night with flash cards is very beneficial.

We will have a quick working snack in the morning.  The second grade team has decided to have a community snack. If you would like to donate a class snack during the school year, it would be appreciated.  You will not need to send in a snack daily for your child.  Please no peanuts in snacks. We have a water fountain in our classroom.

If you have any questions or concerns, I am happy to meet or talk on the phone.  You will be able to contact me by email, letter, or phone message.  I will get back to you as quickly as I can.  If you have anything that you would like me to know about your child, I would love to hear about it.  If there are any specific instructions about your child’s dismissal, please let me know.  My goal is to have this be a very positive and rewarding experience for your child this year.

Thank you,

Susan Ayr
